16 Go and look now
Body sat in the centre of the dark Pumphouse and decided to pivot again, and change her view and position. Body was in excruciating pain and it was difficult to move as now the Little Red Haired Girl was sleeping on her lap. She didn’t want to wake her by moving too much. She couldn’t face the little ones questions anymore at the moment. It was too painful, and her belief in what she said to her overwhelmed Body. Such innocence and faith. Where had all that gone?
Body inched her turn slowly with as little disturbance as possible, resisting the urge to cry out as the knives of pain plummeted deeper.
Body was facing the barred door, and could see the moon through the upper part of the door, this ‘window’, as it moved across the starlight sky. Unlike the other window this one had a grid which divided the space into 12. 12 squares
‘What is that?’ Body wondered to itself as she saw that one square was slightly different in shape. As eyes squinted through the dark to try and see what was different about it. ‘It was just part of the upright grid, no, it was thicker than the others and irregular and partially hidden’ she assumed. ‘Maybe it was some sort of rustic handle to pull the door with from the outside? Maybe it was a distant branch of a tree she was seeing in the wrong perspective?’ Body was not able to move at the moment with the Little Red Haired Girl in her lap, and anyway she was in so much pain she would be kind them both and leave finding out what it was to another time.
“You are too soft, go and look now, never mind about her” demanded Brain.
“You know she’s right, why are you always so nasty?” asked Body
“Because I learn about facts and we need to find out what that is on the door window. It may give us a clue, a possible way out of here.”
“Well I am not going to wake her and I am in too much pain. I will investigate tomorrow in the daylight.”
“Why do you never listen to me?”
“Because you are not always right and often inconsiderate.”
“Yes I am. I am meant to learn facts from school and throughout our life. Its my job. Anyway I am factual and logical which is more than I can say for you, or your Heart or your ‘Soul’ as you like to call it. You got us into this mess for a start.”
“There you go again, Nasty, negative and blaming”
“Well I told you not to trust Noswad based on factual knowledge from your own history. But oh no, you chose to believe the ‘good’ you saw in him, the potential. Soul told you it was a spiritual and rare connection unlike any other, and Heart told you how much you loved him. And you Body, and Spirit certainly enjoyed the caresses and joy etc. Only I could see the truth. You are so stupid and gullible.”
“Shut up Brain. I am fed up of your constant negative dialogue. Tell me, how is what you are saying helpful at this point in time?” There was a pause.
“I am trying to help you to evaluate the situation and hopefully get out of this place.”
“No you’re not. You are blaming me, Heart, Spirit and Soul and its not helpful. Nor are you helpful with the little one, not an ounce of empathy to how scared she or myself may be feeling. So unless you have something constructive to say, be quiet. For you are exhausting me.”
“You’re the boss I guess, but I am telling you the facts. Facts are knowledge and you should listen to me. Even though you may not like what I have to tell you.”
“I understand Brain but sometimes I wish you would be kinder.”
“That gets you nowhere as you keep finding out.”
“Well I would rather be me, and see the potential, the good in people, inspiration and imagination in everyday things, empathy and connection with people other than myself, otherwise there is no relief from facts, no compassion for anyone. Where would that lead people if all they saw was facts?”
“Not to here, that’s for sure” Brain huffed and went into shut down mode.
“Good” Body said to itself.
“It is” said Nana “There is always another way to skin a Rabbit.”
Not sure I ever understood that saying of hers but its familiarity made Body smile to herself.
“Its good to see you smile” said the now familiar unfamiliar voice. “The daylight will come soon.”
“Thank you” she said into the darkness.
