202 Which are you?
“Will you tell me a story?” the Little Red Haired Girl asked one night as Body was not able to sleep.
“How about Goldilocks?” Body suggested.
“I know that one and I’m too old for it” she answered.
“I know but I don’t want to have to read or think of one, my eyes are tired. Will it do for now?”
“Ok. I like the sound of your voice anyway, it will do.”
“Which version are you going to use? queried Brain. “There are at least three that I know of. The original had an old vagabond woman as the intruder instead of Goldilocks.”
“Brain, I really don’t want to work that hard” Body moaned.
“Or you could use the three bachelor bears with Goldilocks, a later version. Or the most common one today with a Mummy, a Daddy and a Baby bear with Goldilocks.”
“Brain quit will you. The child just wants a story” Body complained.
“Either way Goldilocks or an old woman, it was naughty to eat another’s porridge” the child said,” so it doesn’t matter. As for the bears they are good bears.”
“Then take your pick” Body suggested.
“Three male bears” the child chose.
So Body started to tell the story and Brain carried on whirring behind it realising that as most fairy stories go. they are really quite scary. Talking about intruders and the oldest version having the old woman upon being discovered, jumping out of the window never to be seen again. It was also quite apt for some of their own choices and there were parrallels Brain could see except for the fact they were their own choices to invite the guests or ‘intruders’, for they sure as hell ended up feeling like they were as Heart would later confirm. They all crossed boundaries into others houses, ate food, sat in chairs and sometimes were caught on the bears return sleeping in one of the beds. The choices between the threes of food, comfort and sleep which is what most desire and need in life and what was perfect for them. Obviously jumping out of a window and never being seen again was a very dramatic ending and hopefully would never happen in real life, although sometimes people are driven to it with great sorrow.
In real life Brain thought the police would be called about the intruder or the missing person so on and so forth….possibly a prison sentence Brain rambled.
The old woman or Goldlocks was depicted as a rude thief, or selfish but innocent person who knew no better, by entering another’s property and stealing. Both versions were contradictory and Brain wondered who had changed the roles and resulting narrative? There had been times in their own life when they had been rude or selfish.
“Will you stop thinking Brain!” Body complained “I am trying to tell a story and fall asleep.”
“I know but it’s kind of strange to change the main character so vastly. And what about the bears? What if they were bad bears? What if they had been the intruders and it been the other way around? Who would know? I mean it would be three against one in a court of law for example. Who do you think the judge would believe? Especially if she wasn’t there to defend herself?”
“For goodness sake ” Body huffed and turned over in bed as if her placement would make a difference to Brain.
“What if she was not rude? What if she was exhausted and just needed help? Would you turnaway at the door an old woman or a child in need of help or begrudge them it in your absence? What if the house belonged to the old woman and the bears just scared her out of it?”
“Where is this path leading to Brain?” Soul sighed.
“I’m not sure” admitted Brain “But there is a distinct lack of knowing both sides to the story don’t you think?”
“It’s only a fairy story” the child reminded Brain.
“And who would be the Bears, good or bad, in our story?” Spirit called. “Can you think of three in particular?”
“Three main bears” Brain confirmed “and one that only came to intrude when Goldilocks thought she was happy and settled. As if he knew when to cause trouble and steal her joy and we let him. Our choice.”
“It doesn’t matter anymore” Body interrupted. “This is our own bed, our own chairs and our own porridge. There are no bears here and besides Golilocks has become an Old woman, not a vagabound yet thank goodness, but aged enough to know that from now on, we make our own choices.”
“We can” the child giggled “and I’m not jumping out of any window!”
“Correct” called Spirit “but they will never see us again.”
“So are we a Bear or a Goldilocks?” Brain questioned.
Spirit laughed “I guess we are somewhere in the middle.”
“Only if the bed, the chair and the porridge are just right” the child giggled “and anyway Grandad says there is always two sides.”
“Two sides to what?” Body asked.
“A story.”
“I sense there is Bear and Goldilocks in all of us.There has to be. How else would we know what is ‘just right’. How else would we know good from bad without understanding both sides of the story?” Soul sighed as Brain and Body finally fell to sleep.
“How else would you know what is Just or Right?” Big voice whispered. “Compassion and understanding or Justice served. A Big question of balance.”
