103 Doors

As the Pumphouse was still in darkness and the Little Red Haired Girl and Nana had gone out to ‘Play’, Brain was relishing the quiet and stillness. It gave it more time to think. This whole situation was beyond belief even though Brain tried to apply logic to it. No sun was the biggest and most obvious incredulous fact Brain could not comprehend.

Being stuck in this Pumphouse was the next, and now the ‘voices’ Brain couldn’t understand or even consider it was listening to. Why was Brain even trying to listen to them? Where they came from and why was Brain considering them? All came from a subject (spirituality, religion, highest self, the universe) it knew absolutely nothing about.

There had been no voices before this Pumphouse, none of ‘them’ either had known separate voices before so why were they separate now? Why were they not thoughts all channelled through Brain? of Brain? Even Body had a voice of her own! This isolation was making Brain lose it’s marbles! and Brain immediately cursed itself for using such a phrase that was not based on fact and obviously came from Nana at some point from it’s memory. Had Brain ever heard her say it? From it’s childhood? It was a common enough phrase but one Brain never thought in favour of or used before.

Brain didn’t know where any of it’s thoughts came from anymore. The policeman at the junction signalling traffic and wearing the fancy white gloves had gone off shift, and so the traffic jam and jumble of thoughts created absolute mayhem from all directions. Absolute hell! Brain decided to give up, it was so tiring.

“Time to meditate then” sighed Soul “but next time don’t leave it to get that bad, opt out and meditate sooner.”

So they did. Deep breathing for Body and Brain initially counting until such time that Brain’s thoughts calmed and Body felt less tension and pain. Spirit felt freer and Soul….well Soul just sighed with relief. It was a good feeling for all and time became insignificant. Body spoke out loud all that concerned her without Brain realising it or being in control. Brain listened instead and it felt weird and ‘out of Body’ almost literally.

Body was talking to another. Who? Brain could not say, but she talked as she would to a good friend, someone she obviously trusted. Although there were direct answers (as far as Brain could detect and let’s face it, it was a weird enough sensation anyway) Brain did not hear them. A bit like hearing one side of a phone conversation, you could guess or assume the others response, but it was not fact and therefore beyond Brain’s remit. No answers reached Brain. Never the less, they all felt better for the meditation, and Brain detected through the nerve responses the strange sensation again like feeling filled with warm water even though the skin surface was cold and feeling shivers.

The weight from Body’s shoulders lifted and Spirit began to soar to the Pumphouse ceiling not crushed or weighted anymore. Spirit got raised with such a white light that Heart made Body cry, not sobs from what Noswad had promised or said, but tears that ran almost like rivers equally from both eyes. Brain thought it strange as the rivers were equal from both eyes and yet their reason for being there different. One eye cried with sadness and the other with joy. Both rivers led to the sea which was vast. A far far bigger picture that made no sense to Brain as an observer and a listener. Brain must remember to ask Heart about it later, it wasn’t literally a real sea but that was the concept Brain was getting in terms of size. The bigger picture.

Soul tried to navigate the sea if you like. It searched for purpose and the meaning of it all here on the earth, and among the stars in the sky within its higher self, within the universe, with the creator? With God? Brain had no idea and just let it all happen. It will be whatever it is. It gave up trying to figure it out. Brain surrendered and felt unburdened.

A picture formed within Brain, a flight of stairs upwards that it counted as Body climbed them. At the top was a ‘room’ for want of a better word. Body’s eyes looked for there was no ceiling and no walls, just three doors. Frameless doors supporting themselves and sat upon a chequerboard floor of black and white. And as Body started to walk forward and across the floor to open one of the doors Brain shouted “Stop!  Hang on! A room with no walls and no ceiling? How do you know the floor is safe? Don’t walk on it!”

The meditation was broken and they were back in their surrounding circular walls and concrete floor of the Pumphouse.

“What did you do that for?” asked Body “I wanted to see what was behind those doors?”

“And that’s where curiosity got the cat” Brain announced. “I’m just trying to keep us safe. It’s my job.”

“We know” Soul sighed “but it may have led to our escape.”

“Impossible. Practical hard work is the only thing that will get us out of here. Facts. Nothing else.”

“You promised to keep your mind open” cried Heart.
“True” admitted Brain.
“Then go with it next time ” sighed Soul. “It’s a path that has opened up to us. Let Body walk it. We should take it or at least observe it. As you say, nothing can be learnt without research.”

Brain was stuck for words to put in Body’s mouth, Soul was speaking the truth and Brain could not deny research was needed. The whole episode of this meditation was beyond Brain and in the absence of any knowledge about it Brain shut up.

One thing for sure was that ‘they’ Heart, Body, Spirit and Soul and even Brain itself felt better for their meditation and ultimately, that was all that mattered.
