4 Outfit
I can be brash like an oversized yellow jumper
Seen by all but believable in appearance
A warning perhaps such as a road work vest
or sunny as a beach umbrella
Will somebody tell her?
I can be like a hole in a sock unseen
Disguised from naked eyes and covered by leather
The hole an omittance, felt only by the wearer
Will somebody tell her?
I can be an exaggerated form of disguise
A costume of feathers that tickle, flatter and surprise
the opponent, their own nakedness feels like shame
How dare they question such a facade? such a game? how dare they ever?
Will somebody tell her?
I can be a mirror, see the reflection asks why the costume can be worn
by either, and suspicion is then born
with how? and what? where their own role fits
with age, sweat and toil the fabric now in bits
Will somebody tell her?
I can be a whole wardrobe, a team effort in the collusion one sees
as one size fits all manner of shapes, as the red velvet drapes
before each role, each scene in a play
Strength in numbers is viscous, complacent and slippery
So many can’t be wrong, it must be me!
Will somebody tell her?
‘Enough is enough’ justice cried and replied as
the judges wig started to slide (maybe he took a bribe)
What price the expert has on his tag (though in the social cave
where the ego resides ) he may brag
and display in the shop window, a promise, an unrealistic offer, a car boot slur
Will somebody tell her?
‘I can be anything you want me to be’
said the man wearing two hats sat in vats of uncertainty
I malformed this one today and prevaricate on tomorrows
for no one will know within their deep sorrows
or even ones own. ‘Take your pick, see which one fits’ I proffer
Will somebody tell her?
I can be a trinket that goes with the outfit
A compliment, a veil, an exaggeration
Used to disarm the jacket of persuasion
To make another feel this way or that
Anything to delude the whole wearer
Will somebody tell her?
I can cloak you in fear, destroy me and mine
To wear whatever the truth will define
As for me? I loath my own and I truly despise
those of others. The disguise, the deliberate misguide, the Jekyll and Hyde
Who I am? and where do I crib and jive?
For I am a lie.
